Patriot Viper m.2 RGB SSD

Patriot Viper M.2 SSD is a storage device that is able to connect directly with the motherboard through PCI-Express 16x Interface. There are various form factors of M.2, but the most common are 2280 and 2242 which will be used on this review.

Patriot Viper M.2 SSD features Schottky-based SDR(Silicon Dioxide) High-speed logic technology for Plug & Play feature. This type of technology prevents voltage losses during the data transfer process.

SDR works up to 10% faster compared to normal Non-SDR products also it consumes less power usage or standby mode. It has a built-in AES 256 bit encryption engine for security purposes if needed by the user. This can help protect personal files from being seen by others.

Besides being so small, M.2 SSD is also extremely durable and shockproof because it features a true one-piece design without any components soldered onto the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or external connectors making it fully sealed and protected against shocks and vibrations and able to withstand 4.9G of impact force. This kind of technology has been used in servers for 10 years but is now available in Patriot Viper M.2 SSD.

Patriot Viper M.2 SSD comes with a free keychain that will help users easily find their drives when plugged into ports.

Also, all Patriot Viper series products will be bundled with a 3D NAND flash chip which is more reliable than previous 2D NAND chip technology for faster read and writes speed plus longer lifespan.

What is NVME SSD?

It stands for Non-Volatile Memory Express. It’s a protocol and physical interface that allows communication between devices and an operating system through PCI Express controller architecture. As NVME SSD uses PCIe to connect with the CPU directly, it can support transfer speeds of up to 4GB/s (10x faster than SATA 3).

Why should I upgrade?

Because NVME SSD is so much faster than SATA 3 which is about 6 times faster than HDD, boot time will be drastically reduced even by using normal HDD you’ll notice a significant improvement in performance.

With Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB, +1hour on boot time, while Samsung 960 Pro 512GB (NVME) only needs 10 seconds and with 1TB 970 Pro NVME drive it takes even less than 5 seconds. Most importantly you’ll get rid of long waiting times when loading your games or apps .

What’s the difference between HDD and HDD+m2, SSD?

Well first of all m2 SSD uses PCI-Express x4 which makes the data transfer rate more than twice as fast as SATA 3, also m2 comes with a controller that makes communication between CPU and storage device more efficient.

On the other hand, AHCI is an interface specification developed back in 2004 by Intel to enable native command queuing over Serial ATA. SATA 3 can do aboutMB/s and m2 can do about GB/s. For the price, m2 is only slightly more expensive than HDD+m2.

How can I tell if my system has an m2 slot?

If your laptop or desktop has a PCI-Express 16x connector providing full bandwidth to external devices, it means it supports m2 SSD.

What makes M.2 different from other storage solutions?

It’s faster and more durable as same as what you’ve learned above ~

Which NVME SSD brands are worth buying?

Samsung, Corsair, Western digital are all good choices.

Is there any difference between PCIe 2 lane speed and PCIe 3 lane speeds?

PCIe’s version number doesn’t dictate its maximum speed at all. Instead, two important factors will determine the top speed that a PCIe device can reach: lane width and transfer rate.

A PCIe 3.0 x1 card is able to perform as fast as a PCIe 3.0 x4 card because it has only half the number of lanes, but it still runs at 16GT/s (32GB/s).

For example, M2 SSD vs M2 SSD, If we put them in the same PCIE slot running as single-channel config we’ll get about GB/s read and write speed while if we use dual-channel configuration we’ll get GB/s to read and write speed .

Will I need an adapter?

The m2 SSD’s thickness varies depending on its model and brand so sometimes you need an adapter to use it on a laptop or desktop. One of the most famous adapters is from Sintech.

It’s very easy to use as all you need to do is plug it into your system and then install m2 SSD as usual, moreover, if you want a speed boost, you can enable “Turbo M.2” mode which will transfer data at the full GB/s speed once you have an NVME host interface.

Which m2 SSD brands are worth buying?

This question is hard to answer mostly because there are too many brands out there with a big variety of products that they offer from affordable ones to ultra-high-end performance models so what we’ll try instead is giving some reviews on specific models which have been proven to be good.

Samsung EVO 960 Pro 512GB (M2) – The fastest M2 SSD ever created and also the most expensive one. It’s worth investing if you want the best performance out of your system as it speeds up games and other apps tremendously. You can use it with a PCIe adapter or simply directly into the SATA3 slot without using an adapter.
