There are a number of laptops currently on the market that claim to be “the best laptop for Revit” or “the best laptop for AutoCAD.” The idea of someone making these claims is not surprising, but what is surprising is that they are rarely backed by any credible evidence.
Are computers really that different?
There are certainly differences between one computer and another, but these differences are often exaggerated by those looking to sell you something. What’s important in terms of designing with computer-aided design software like Revit or AutoCAD is the processor speed, amount of RAM memory, hard drive space, video card speed, etc. Unfortunately, most people don’t know how much these things affect their work; many think that faster = better.
A computer’s ability to run AutoCAD or Revit well is actually based on just 4 things:
The speed of the processor (CPU) The amount of memory (RAM) The hard drive space available The video card and its speed
As a general rule, faster = better for running CAD software. A faster processor will open and save models significantly faster than a slower one, and your user interface will not become unresponsive as you work.
However, if you try to run too many programs at once or use some other program(s) in addition to Revit at the same time that require lots of system resources then you may notice significant performance degradation even on an otherwise fast computer. So, in short, if you’re only using Revit and no other resource intensive software then a faster processor is probably what you want.
Amount of Memory (RAM)
This is also important, as CAD software like Revit can use a lot of memory. The more RAM your computer has, the more models it can have open at the same time without slowing down. However, once you reach about 8GB or so of RAM usage you will likely not see any significant performance gains from having more.
Hard Drive/SSD Space
This is perhaps less important for CAD software than for some other types of software, but it is still necessary to have a substantial amount of hard drive space to store all of your model files on.
What’s most important is to actually have enough space available on your hard drive, which you can find by right-clicking on “This PC” (or Computer) in the start menu and selecting Properties. There should be at least 20GB available for temporary files.
Video Card Speed
A faster video card will allow you to run Revit faster without experiencing any slow down or stuttering while scrolling or panning around in your models. This is especially helpful if you like running lots of different programs alongside your modeling software simultaneously since some other programs use up a lot of GPU resources (if this doesn’t make sense to you don’t worry about it).
Are laptop computers good for CAD?
Not too good if you know !! The more power you provide to your computer the more better performance you get. In general, laptops utilize less power as compared to desktops.
And still if you are looking for a solution then increasing the ram of your laptop will help but not good as a desktop.
In general, laptops are not ideal for CAD software. Laptop computers have several major disadvantages when running CAD software:
Laptops only come with one video card, which is usually a low-powered gaming-grade graphics card that isn’t useful for serious rendering or heavy usage of multiple monitors. Many laptops also do not allow you to easily expand the number of video cards installed in them, and they often limit how much total memory can be used on all your video cards as well as how many monitors you can connect at once.
This means it’s difficult to upgrade or replace a laptop’s “graphics subsystem.” In other words, if you buy a laptop now but want faster graphics 3 months from now you’ll probably have to buy another whole computer instead. This problem is less problematic with desktop computers.
Laptops come in a very limited number of sizes and shapes, which limits your ability to customize a computer around a CAD workstation. It’s difficult to fit an extra-large video card inside the cramped interior of a laptop, for instance. Laptops also don’t have as many slots for adding hard drives or memory.
Desktop computers are not only more customizable but they also allow you to easily swap out parts without buying new ones; this means you buy exactly what you need today instead of spending more on stuff you’ll never use tomorrow (though some people prefer doing it this way).
All that being said there are still some laptops that work well with Revit . They just cost a lot more than a good desktop computer with the same hardware specs. Plus, they have the added inconvenience of being unable to easily upgrade their hardware in the future.
How Much Does a Good CAD Workstation Computer Cost?
CAD workstations are very expensive! The cheapest one that can run Revit is going to cost you at least $1,200, and for this price, all you’ll get is a computer capable of running Revit decently well. To get a full-fledged CAD workstation capable of using every feature in Revit 2016 and rendering large models it’s going to be around $2,500. And even then this isn’t necessarily sufficient; if you’re serious about what you do with AutoCAD or Revit you’ll likely want to add a few more upgrades, which will quickly drive the price up.
